Dan McVey talked alot about the setting of this passage...gives great insight into it. There do not seem to be many word study needs. I would investigate the words, "build", church, gates, overcome, bind, and loose. Is this the first usage of the word church? What would that word have meant for the disciples? I have noted in the margin of my bible: Jesus' offensive strategy. Whether this means that the church is protected from hell's distruction, or that hell cannot keep the church from rescuing people from it's grip...is an important outcome of the study. I lean to the latter interpretation.
Just thoughts. What a great passage to be putting under a magnifying glass.
